Koffee with Karina & Kathleen Shannon: How to have a successful podcast!

Friday, October 7, 2016

Kathleen Shannon is the co-founder of Braid Creative, which is a personal branding service for content creators. She also co-hosts the amazing podcast BeingBoss, which is the MUST listen podcast for online content creators. Kathleen shares her journey as a blogger on AndKathleen.com

I LOVE (seriously obsessed) the BeingBoss podcast, it has helped me so much on this blogging journey! How did it come to be?
I had been regularly having Skype chats with my creative colleague and "business bestie" Emily Thompson. We were always chatting about what's next in our business, what we're struggling with, as well as, celebrating little victories together. Emily has always had her finger on the pulse of business trends so when she emailed me saying "Let's start a podcast – it's going to take over the world." I believed her and I said yes!

The content is always on POINT! How do you plan your content?
Honestly, we're just chatting about what is interesting to us at the time. Every month we have a team meeting with our editorial director, Caitlin Brehm, to discuss themes we want to chat about and creatives we want to interview. Then we try to create our blog and minisode content around those larger overarching themes. Another great way to make good content is to listen to your community! Our listeners have so many amazing questions – simply talking about those questions and answering them on air is a great way to create relevant content.

You ladies always have the most interesting guests! Any tips on connecting with content creators?
We're usually emailing guests that we're already friends with or fans of. If we don't know someone personally we'll ask for an introduction from a friend who does. If you want to be a guest on a podcast I would recommend emailing them yourself (90% of the time we say no to publicist requests for interviews with their clients – even big names!). I would also keep it brief, personable and be very clear about what it is you want to talk about or have to promote.

The podcast is AWESOME! There has been a "Podcast Boom" in the past few years! What advice would you give to someone wanting to start a podcast?
Just get started! You don't need anything beyond iPhone ear buds with a microphone built in and a simple editing tool like Garage Band to get started. But if you want to learn more about starting a podcast (like how to brand yourself, plan content, automate, monetize, and hammer out all the other logistics) check out our course Podcast Like A Boss at www.podcastlikeaboss.com.

I think an area that online creators spend time stressing about is: sponsorships/brands to collaborate with! What tips can you offer podcasters trying to find sponsors?
We've had a long time relationship with Freshbooks and are just now starting a new partnership with ConvertKit. They're both companies we already love and use – our genuine support of them means our listeners believe us when we tell them how great they are. Mutual respect and simply getting on the phone goes a long way when it comes to nurturing a sponsor relationship. But there are SO many other ways you can monetize and build your own brand without sponsors!

ConvertKit for email marketing – I've become such an email marketing nerd. I'm obsessed with it.
CoSchedule – this is an editorial calendar app that hooks in with WordPress and I love it.
Asana – we use this internally to manage all of our projects, sponsors, launches, etc.
Slack – we hang out with our Being Boss Clubhouse members in Slack and are chatting with likeminded creatives every day about topics that interest us!
Other podcasts! – I'm a fan of listening to podcasts – my current favorites are "Anna Faris Unqualified", "Marriage is Funny", and "Invisibilia" – I always get ideas on content, structure, and style by listening to other podcasts.
